1. Why do I need a half hourly meter?
For customers with an electricity capacity of 65kW or more, half hourly metering is not only mandatory, but a pre requisite in electricity supply agreements. This is an obligation deemed by the Balancing and Settlements Code which governs electricity supply and is part of the electricity supply licence conditions.
2. Why do we need this type of meter?
Customers with an electricity demand of 65kW or more are required to have metering capable of measuring consumption in half hourly periods. The meters are read remotely via a telecommunications link and the consumption data provided to your supplier to allow them to bill you accurately.
3. What do the meter operator charges cover?
The meter operator invoices customers for the rental and maintenance of the half hourly meter.
4. What does the meter operator contract cover?
The meter operator contract covers all metering related work including installation and callout in the unlikely event of data retrieval faults.
5. What contract options are available?
SSE Metering offer 1,3 and 5 year contract terms, but are willing to discuss other options to suit your needs.
6. What Code of Practice meter am I?
The industry has issued a Code of Practice (Cop) and depending on your available capacity determines what type of meter you need.
Code of Practice 5 meter = Circuit Capacity up to and including 1 Megawatt (65 kVA to 1000 kVA)
Code of Practice 3 meter = Circuit Capacity greater than 1 Megawatt and not exceeding 10 Megawatts (1001 kVA to 10,000 kVA)
Code of Practice 2 meter = Circuit Capacity greater than 10 Megawatts and not exceeding 100 Megawatts (10,001 kVA to 100,000 kVA)
Each Code of Practice will have different charges for the Meter Operator, sites which are larger than a Code of Practice 2 meter will be priced according to the work that is required.
7. What is the process I need to follow?
You should return a signed copy of the Meter Operator contract, before the meter is installed. The Meter Installation will not go ahead without a Meter Operator contract in place.
Contact your supplier to advise them you are appointing us as your Meter Operator. Your supplier will then send an appointment instruction and we will accept the instruction on your behalf to be your meter operator. You can then ask your supplier to send an appointment request for the meter installation.
8. When will you install the meter?
Providing you have followed the above process, we will normally install the metering within 10 working days of receipt of the appointment request.
9. What work is required to install the meter?
This is very much dependant on the type of metering required. For CT metering we can install the meter without interrupting the power supply. However for Whole Current metering the power would need to be turned off. In both cases we expect the customers installation made ready with the appropriate meter tails and equipment in place.
10. How do I pay?
We’ll send an annual invoice to the address you provided on the contract or the customer contact form. If you’ve taken advantage of the 5% discount offered for Direct Debit, you’ll still receive an invoice and it advises you of the date we’ll collect the Meter Operator charge. We accept payment by cheque, BACS and CHAPS.
In addition to the above we can also accept payment by Credit or Debit card.
11. Can I pay the meter operator charges every month?
Whilst we do not offer the option to pay monthly as standard, we’ll consider a request where there is a genuine business case and the customer agrees to pay the monthly invoice by Direct Debit.
